3.73 vs 4.10
Hey guys. I have heard mixed stories about the difference from these gears. People say 3.73's stock are stronger then 4.10's stock on a truck. The 4.10's are better off the line but the 3.73's are better in mid to high rpms.
Do you think overall the 3.73's are a better choice for durability when you start pumping the engine with serious power? Longevity is the key.
Anyone take a gander on this?
Thanks.

no durability issues that i see. i like my 3.73's. never driven a truck with 4.10's. i think 3.73's are probably a better track gear imo. look at the fastest truck on the list. running a 3.73 gear.

i do want to drive a truck with 4.10's for a week to see if i would like it. i figure it would give you more ooomph out of the hole but on the top end i would think if you didn't have the motor to push it, then you wouldn't pull as hard. onyx, how do the 4.10's compare with 3.73's at the end of the race about the same or did it pull all the way through?

With the 4L60E in our trucks the 4.10s help mask the big rpm drop between 2nd and 3rd rears. With 3.42s and a HPP3 most stock trucks run the 1/4mi in 2nd gear, with 3.73s you have to shift into 3rd below the engine's powerband,4.10s let you shift into 3rd sooner allowing the truck to get into the powerband sooner. The trick to getting performance is to keep the engine in it's sweet spot most of the time.Given the choice between a 3.73 and a 4.10 gear with performace being the only factor I would choose the 4.10 every time.I don't think that durability is nearly the issue in a truck with a 8.6" ring gear as in an f-body with a 7.5" ring gear.

what size tires are you guys using with the 4.10's on an everyday basis and how is the traction with that setup? i am having a ton of traction problems now with my 73's. never was a problem with the 42's. then again, i am still using the stock size tire. i am sure that has a lot to do with it...
