Default 3500 Auxiliary Fuel Tank on a 1500

Has anybody installed an auxiliary fuel tank in place of the spare tire? I’ve seen a factory auxiliary tank there on the 3500 flatbeds. I’m thinking about installing one and using it instead of the factory tank. What would be needed for this? I crawled under one today and looked it over, it looks like I’d need to fab up some mounts but it doesn’t look like too much of a bitch to do. Any info will be appreciated!

True that! I just about gave up on the idea of having a rear mounted tank until a flatbed 3500 passed me yesterday and I saw it! I'm halfway tempted to just jump into the swap but I'd like some information if I can get it first. Either way I will do a write-up.

I am pretty sure it is just a matter of swapping in all of the parts and then flashing the pcm with the 3500 hd tune. The pcm monitors the fuel level in the tanks and then automatically switches over when it gets to a certain level and activates the pump in the auxiliary tank while shutting down the main pump.

Of course there's no reason you couldn't wire up a manual switch to relays from one pump to the other...

I just noticed that the truck in question is an '02 though... Is '02 a return fuel system??? How would you make the second tank return fuel to it and not the main tank? You could run separate lines, but you would still have to have a common rail and it would return to both tanks... hummmmmmmmm
