4.10s 3.73s or 3.42s
I am tryin to decide what gear to run in my truck.
2002 gmc
5.3 with 3.42s and open diff.
should i stay with the 3.42s or get 3.73s or 4.10s
these gears will be run in an eaton limited carrier. on the street theyll be run with stock 255/70s and at the track they will be run with 245/50/nitto xtreme drags.what should i go with?

You want to cross the 1/4 mile line at the end of a gear. You need decide what MPH range you are shooting for then calculate out what gear you need VS the tire size it takes to get you there.
Example - you might like the 4.10 gear but you wind up shifting to 4th gear before you finish the 1/4 mile. Now you are crossing the line and not in your power band.

If I was 1/4 junkie, i'd go with the 4.10s, or get best of both worlds, and 3.73s
A few guys on here are running 4.10s, im sure they can help ya decide and tell you all the goods and bads.

Re: 4.10s 3.73s or 3.42s
I trap between 107-109 in the quarter with the 4.10's, a 26" race tire (5% growth) and the converter locked up. I am running about 400 rpm shy of max rpm in third. 4.10's are well suited with a 26" tire and the power combo I use. I will soon be going to a 28" Hoosier full slick in hopes of avoiding a 4.56 gear...the nitrous really likes to "pull through" a lower gear ratio. 3.73's are a good street gear but higher ratios are definately beneficial in large tire heights.

well just decide how fast u want to be, versus how much u want to spend on gas. 3.42s get great gas mileage but arnt to great for racing. 3.73s get a little worste gas mileage and are a little better for racing. then 4.10s the gas gets even worste but the best for racing. u get the picture, hope this helps

I dont know if this helps or not, but I have the 3.42's on my 03' and i'm going to swap them out for the 3.73's simply because I do alot more regular driving than I do racing (I do my fair share of racing), but on a daily driver that sees highway time fairly regularly the 3.73's are the choice for me.

Re: 4.10s 3.73s or 3.42s
so, how much of a gas mileage drop should be expected with 4.10s? i'm getting a set of 4.10s with a posi off here but i'm not sure if i should go with them or 3.73s. i race and hot rod a bit, but want something reliable on the street

4.10'S are probably a good gear even on a daily driver. Thanks to an overdrive transmission.
At 70 mph with a 29.4 inch tire you will only be running around 2200 rpm's.
Check out www.dirtroad.com/gears
They have a rpm and mph calculator.
The 4l60e trany has a final drive of .70
