It's not that easy to get a S-10 with a 4.3 in the low 14 with just bolts ons, let letalown a full-size. Better go for the V-8, mileage will be very similar.

You can do the v6 to v8 swap if you buy a complete engine from schram auto on ebay,

100% complete engine with motor mounts and pcm with wiring harness
buy some electric fans
and some headers

Motor with less than 100 miles!

total cost about 3000.00 that includes the Headers, fans and estimated shipping..

what kind of mods is it taking to bring a 5.3 ecsb 3 73 auto 2wd into the mid/high 14's? i checked chevy's site and the current 4.3, 4.8, and 5.3 are listed as getting the same fuel mileage...weird

It really wouldn't take too much work to get those numbers. LT Headers, Exhaust, Ramair, Cam, and a tune I think could get you there if not maybe even further.

14's Headers intake & 4:10 gears that will get ya there
then when you want mid to low 13's throw you a 6.0 in there and cam and tune it slap on some E-fans and have fun.
then when you want 12's......
lol

what would just intake / exhaust/ header/ ram air do for me?

how much are the tune's costing? the only thing about that is sometimes i want to have a lead foot, and other times im penny pinching for fuel so i dont want to be stuck with a tune that is just for racing. any programmer options?

DO NOT GET A 4.3L V6 NEVER!!!!!!!!!!
YOU MUST HAVE A 5.3!

the 5.3 feels like it has so much more power that the 4.3 it it ridiculuous...the 4.3 to 6.0 swap is too involved thats why i havent done it yet.. im trying to find a 5.3 truck rcsb

bluecajun is running mid 12s with a bolt-on 5.3 he might have a cam idk

You can get a tune from wait4me for around $158. Like others have said, mileage is about the same.
