Default 4.8 to 5.3

Found a 2000 5.3 engine for 400$. I called the Dude and he said that it was tapping and only had 20k miles on it. would this be a good deal and if so would all of my accessories off my 4.8 work on it and could you bolt my 5 speed trans up to the 5.3 thanks for the info.

I may not buy this motor so if anyone else is interested e-mail me and i will give you this dudes number.

If this is a full 5.3 with heads (longblock), it is a good deal. Heads will sell for $250+ by themselves.

yea, thats a good price for one that isn't "tapping" and every thing should just swap over.

if your going to go thru the work of swaping the engine you might want to think about that 6.0 that is forsale, no tapping and a substancial increase in power. everything swaps right over from the 4.8 to a 6.0 also.

This may be a stupid question but, I thought 4.8/5.3/6.0 were short blocks and the larger engines were long blocks??? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="gr_emb.gif" />

no such thing as a stupid question

short block refers to just part of an engine. it includes the block, crank, rods, pistons, and i think the cam is usualy included too.. no heads, no accesories, no intake or exhaust parts.

add heads and you have a longblock, anything more like intake or fuel system parts are usualy talked about as being more than just a long block.

sounds like your thinking of the old engines that were refered to as small blocks and big blocks. the small blocks are 262-400ci and the big blocks are 396-502ci. i am prety sure the 8.1 is still considered a big block but i don't think our engines(ls1 based) are refered to as small blocks.

Confusion - short, long - small, big

Short block= Block and lower rotating assembly (crank, rods pistons, etc)

Long block= Same as short block, but assembled with heads and internal components (lifters, pushrods, etc). Basically ready for install.

Small block= Typical V8, 327, 350, 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, - not sure what the cut off is, but they are less then 400 cubic inches.

Big block= The factory big ones - 454, 8.1, etc...

Thanks. That make sense. I was mixing up short block and small block.

Some small blocks are more than 400ci. Like the 422.
