4.8L Daily/tow rig naturally aspirated upgrades...cam?
I have an '06 CCSB 4x4 4.8 truck w/ 3.73 gears. Debating some N/A upgrades to bump the power. I started a thread in Forced induction, got some great feedback, and would ideally go that route to get where I want to be. But funds aren't there and I probably wont keep the truck long enough to see all the gains from the investment.
SOO... Id like to hear my best options on the N/A side. I daily drive the truck, and will haul with it throughout the rear. Mostly light hauling, 18' car trailer with quads or RZR's. Probably at most haul the car trailer with a Jeep on it. Couldn't imagine hauling anything over 7-8k lbs with it.
I was thinking, Cam, valve springs, exhaust (headers if needed), intake (if needed) and tuning. Would be ok with doing trans and TC upgrades as required to get the best out of a cam.
Looking for Cam suggestions that you feel will fit my needs. Not looking for the Big HP cams, but something that will give great overall gains, or as much torque gains as possible. Def. cant afford to lose any torque out of this little guy. Of course everyone love some cam chop, not a necessity. But always good to have some good lope if spending the money on a cam.

Cam Motion, Vinci, or BTR have some great mild cams that would be exactly what you're looking for. Search around on their websites and give them a call next week and talk over your goals with them.

I will check around their sites today when I get a chance. What are some realistic power gains from Cam, exhaust and tuning? I was dead set on the low boost turbo set up I discussed in the Forced Induction side, but I am in the process of building a 30x40x12 shop and its eating up all my extra funding in a hurry. But I dont want to dump a lot of $$ into just a few extra ponies.

around 100hp can be had from the right cam and supporting mods, exhaust, tune etc but you're not going to get there with a real mild cam. Bump in compression is like anything else. Greater thermal efficiency = more power.

On the bit of research I did. I wasn't able to find anyone trying to accomplish what I am. Seems all are working with 5.3's or 6.0's or trying to make the most HP as possible with Torque being insignificant. I need to weigh out my options and price/gain vs N/A or Boosted.
Is it very common to mill the heads to gain compression on these little motors? Seems like at approx 8.8:1 compression, they could really benefit getting upwards of 9.5:1 like the 5.3.
A good torque friendly cam, a nice bump in compression and good exhaust and tuning seems like a great way to get some pep into the 4.8. Id just hope to find some articles where others have dont what Im trying to..

Most have figured out that modding a 4.8L is a waste of time/money for naturally aspirated vehicles. Your 4.8 isn't 8.8:1 compression, its 9.5:1 just like the 5.3. Milling heads in the LS world is very common.
