I might have gotten one if I had ordered instead of buying it off the lot. I like manuals but I've heard,on this forum, that the 5-spd is not very strong...but neither is the 4L60E.

GM never offered anything other than the 4.8 with manual trans. I tried to get the 5.3 w/manual in 99 and you couldn't even order it that way. If you wanted manual you were stuck with 4.8 and that's what I ended up with. It's a lot of fun to drive as I have done numerous mods. CNCed heads, cam, 1.85 rockers, headers, gutted cats, cat-back, elec fans and Meziere elec water pump, ASP underdrive pulley, cold air induction, etc. It really goes and sounds great as the cam has a 112 LSA and the cats are gutted. Not having to deal with a tempermental automatic is a real plus. I do get the infamoust P0300 DTC from time to time, but it only lasts a day or two and they it resets itself. I don't even pay any attention to it anymore because I know what it is without even pulling out the AutoTap. Once I get EFI Live Pro V7 Flashscan I can desensitize the sensor and the DTC will no longer go set.

That's right, because my aunt is a dealer at the Chevrolet dealership where I'm from. When the '99's came out, I was talking to her about special ordering a 5.3L w/5-speed. When she went to put the truck together with the special order vehicle computer program they have, there was no way to get the 5.3L w/5-speed.

After doing an extensive search for a 5.7 / 5speed I bought a new 95 stepside with the 5.0 / 5 speed. I looked again in 96 with no luck. In 97 I decided to order one. I got me a 97 sport, red, stepside, G80, with the 5.7 so they did offer the 5.7 / 5 speed until then. Very nice truck
