Default 4" Aluminum Driveshaft Too Much?

Since I can't get a Denny's N2O shaft, and they want mucho dinero for their HD aluminum piece, I decided to stop by my local drivetrain shop and get some suggestions.

They suggested a 4" aluminum shaft. With a new slip yoke for the 80E, 1350 joints for the driveshaft and rearend, the total came to $365 welded, balanced, everything.

I don't hear a lot about upgrading driveshafts--can't remember hearing of anyone breaking one.
  • Since my truck is lowered and really should have a shortened shaft anyway, I might as well replace it. Right?
  • Any problems fitting a 4" driveshaft in the 1500 trucks?
  • I might have a line on a 3"(?) 3/4-ton G-series van aluminum driveshaft--would that be a viable option, or should I stick with the 4"?

Y'know, my Denny's HD Steel Driveshaft was $310 and is one SOLID piece of machinery. you might consider going that way because the HD Aluminum one is nice but it's really not necessary at the power levels our trucks make (or are really capable of making)

BTW....WHY can't you get a N20 Ready driveshaft ????

Because of the length. They can only be 54" or less, or something like that. My driveshaft is in the neighborhood of 65" long.

I'm really trying to set the truck up to handle my long-term goal of doing a twin turbo setup, and there's no point in having to get another driveshaft/tranny/etc later on down the road.

I guess that $365 isn't bad for all that I'm getting?

I've had a HD aluminum dennys driveshaft for about 3 summers now. It was alot but what isn't before the classified section existed. I also replaced my steel unit that was rusted to **** right off the lot.

There located in NY so I was glad to go with them. If you can get some kind of warrentee for your shaft that's in your area go for it.

Hey creederado, did you notice any better throttle response/ faster acceleration when you went from the steel to the aluminum driveshaft?
