Get one without autotrac, because then you wouldnt have to do any special computer tuning because there is no computer functions for the transfer case. Im sure it would be an easier swap. The traction with AWD is definately great, thats the main reason why i got my SS.

Re: 4 x 4 to awd?
why is the autotrac necessary? i know i needed the rest but why the autotrac? also i know there are a few buttons in the cab and those have to differ from the c3 and a z71 so is there any different wiring situations there?

it would probably be easier to cover up the hole, than run into some electronics problems, all trucks probably have a stamped spot there already so a cover plate shouldnt be hard to do. If i was gonna do it, id definately get one without autotrac

If it were me I would just take the easy way out and run a RCSB 4x4 with 4.10's from the factory. Swap ya a 6.0, cam, power adder, built bottom end. Keep the tranny and x case in it and engage the 4wd when needed right before a race.
Basically the same route Bix Tex and Parish went. IMO, I just don't think a transfer case swap to get full time AWD would be a good bang for the buck modification.

Re: 4 x 4 to awd?
It's not good to drive on hard surfaces in 4x4 because the gears in the manual transfer case get in a bind when you make sharp turns, it doesn't like it when the inside & outside wheels are rotating at different speeds. Kind of like making turns in a car with a spool...chirp, hop, clunk, chirp, hop, clunk...
The AWD trucks have clutches inside the transfer case to allow some slippage when turning.
If I win the lotto soon, I'd like to convert my 1500HD to AWD, but I want to do it using the 4L80E. I'd throw in a 427 with a Radix on top and go hunt down parish8.

ok well i found one without autotrac and i want to try this and i'm not worried about the best bang for the buck if i was then i would of bough a drag car but do you really think i should go with the no autotrac it does make the most sense as long as the awd transfercase doesn't need anything electronically also why can't you run a 4 x 4 all the time i can't remember why you can't
