408 camshaft suggestions
I got my rotating assembly in, thanks AP Engineering. Now the search is on for a camshaft. I would like a descent size cam but, not something I will have to idle at 1,000 or change valve springs ever 10,000 miles. I will keep the truck intake and spray a 175 shot. I will have a 3,400 stall, 10.2:1 compression, and a good set of heads.
I was wondering if I should consider a custom cam for my setup. I believe that most cams for GenIII smallblocks are designed for a car with a shorter runner intake. I was thinking that the intake and exhaust duration should be the same. I figure that the truck intake needs all the help it can get, with getting air into the cylinder. The exhaust has a easier time, full length headers, no cats, and true duals with 2 1/2in. pipe.
P.S. AP Engineering was a pleasure to deal with. I changed my order 3 times and still got the kit quick. Although it will still be over a month before assembly begins.

Chris@AP-Engineering posted this awhile back:
I think the truck intake will do alright with the right camshaft. I really feel that a reverse or standard split camshafts will not work well with this setup.
Here is what I can tell you. I built two 427 engines for a marine application and they made 600 horse at the fly wheel with the truck intake and pulled up to 6800 rpm. I think that you will be fine with the truck intake.

I was thinking a standard split ... maybe a 224/230 on a 114. Keep the lift in check, below .550 and you shouldn't have to worry about replacing springs if you get some good ones to start with.

I was thinking a custom grind around 230/230@110 at 560 lift. The lsa is low but, I want to make good power with the motor and I have heard that the lsa really doesn't matter with anything under a 200 shot. My buddy has used 112 lsa on a 400 squeeze with another 250 after the 60ft.

I think a reverse split is designed to run with a really big shot of nitrous. With a big shot of nitrous you don't need extra exhaust duration, because the intake charge is carrying an extra charge of oxigen from the nitrous and burns much more effeciently.Maybe a Thunderracing 227/224.569/.563 114.

under .550 lift on a 408??? you'll have the most under cammed stroker motor in the game...why not utalize all the power that is left on the table with a bigger, more suitable cam for a big motor? a 230/230 .560 cam would be great in the 5.7 you have now though. get a set of isky 295d springs and have someone set them up right, i've hear of guys running .670+ lift on them for extended amounts of time, it's all in the setup. if you go with that small of a cam you'll be very underpowered. that's less lift than the cam that was in my motor, with just barely more lift.

about the truck intake, i've had several guys that have made several low 9 second LS1s tell me that the truck manifold will become a hindrance at that level....all have reccomended an LS6 manifold at the least, and most say the LSX or a sheetmetal (if you're feelin crazy) would be even better.

Yeah,a LSX intake plumbed with a really big direct port nitrous setup would be really cool.Use a 75 horse dry shot to light things off and then hammer it with 250 horse wet direct port shot once you get moving.750+rwhp would really get that beast down the track in a hurry.
