Default 408 is here!!

Wow, what a day. I'll spare the details, but I was supposed to have my block back by noon, figured I'd be home by about 2 or 2:30 this afternoon. Well, it's just after midnight and I just got home. Finished at the machine shop around 8:30. We had a mix-up with the cam bearings and had to track down a set last minute. Also had a problem with the pistons fitting right. The #8 piston is cut differently than the rest to clear the reluctor ring, but there was nothing noted ANYWHERE in the piston box or instructions that this was the case. My builder said in his 20+ years he has never seen anything like that. Anyway, that took us about an hour to figure out as well. Not really sure where the rest of the time went....but it was a long day.

But for the good news!!! I have my 408 shortblock sitting in my garage!! Here are some pics. I'm going to work on some of the assembly tonight and I'm hoping to be able to put the engine back in the truck tomorrow sometime.

I apologize for the crappy quality - camera phone. I forgot my real camera.

And Beto and Todd - sorry I didn't call guys, crazy day. I'll definitely come down sometime soon to chill with you.

Thanks

Ran into some problems already. Windage tray doesn't clear the rod bolts on one set of pistons. I'll either have to space it or clearance it. ARP studs are also different thread pitch than the stock studs, so I have to find some new nuts to hold the windage tray on. I also need a new torque wrench. The Callies crank is keyed, and my stock balancer is not. And I'm missing the plug for the coolant temp sensor port on the passenger head.

I got the cam installed, along with the timing set and oil pump tonight. Also put in the lifters and trays.

Looks like tomorrow's going to be a busy day tracking down parts. Time for bed for now.

The ARP main studs SHOULD have come with washers for spacing the tray and some silver nuts for the windage tray. Mine is spaced out with the ARP provided washers and about 3 extra ss washers but that because mine is a 4.100 crank. Im guessing its #1 and #2 cylinders that the bolts are hitting right? Most with strokers just cut the front section away. Here is a pic of what mine looks like, take note that you may need to clearance the sides too a bit to get it to sit down further in the pan.

On the keyed part, your key shouldnt be long enough to interfere with the crank pully it should only be long enough to engage the timing crank gear and stop. Im not sure what you are really talking about I guess since you said you got the oil pump on an doyu couldnt do that with an extra long key.

The key on the crank is the entire length of the crank snout. The oil pump goes over the timing gear and doesn't interfere with the key on the crank snout at all.

I guess if my ARP set came with spacers and crap my machinist didn't give them back. I'm not driving to Tucson for washers and nuts, so I'll have to find something that works. Time to hit up Ace Hardware I guess.

Most of the rod bolts clear, it's the 5-6 ones that don't actually. Weird.

Hey Cody - do you know what the thread size is on the main studs so I can get a nut for it?
