You see people all the time buying a crate motors and pulling it apart to check clearances, unfortunately you didn't and this is what can happen.It may have been in spec and been something else that caused the issue but you will never know. Defiantly do a full tear down and check every single clearance. Replace every bearing from crank to cam.
