Default 4l60 and 80

how much torque can a stock 4l60-e tranny take? also what about the 4l80 that you can find on some of your 2500 pick ups. how much can it take?

stock? built?

not sure about tq, most people talk hp for some reason. the stock 60 will be hurting with anything over 400rwhp for sure, might do it for awhile. if you get a built one they are saying 600rwhp, maybe a little more.

i am curently working my way up to the limits of a 4l80, i should be able to give you some real world experience info in a month or 2 but right now i am at 400rwhp and it seems to love it there, no sign of slip or anything, seth at cmotorsports told me he has seen a stock 4l80e(with shift kit) go 700rwhp. and when built can take as much as 1200rwhp, should only have to build that tranny once i would think.

According to GM powertrain the 4L60E[Corvette version]is rated at 360lb/ft on engine torque and the 4L80E is rated at 440lb/ft of engine torque.They also rate the 4L65E at 380lb/ft of torque.

thanks for the info,

have you guys had any trouble w/ your 4l80's or know of someone who has? the reason i ask is b/c i haven't found anyone who has yet. Seems like the 80 is hell of alot more dependable than the 60.

You will have a hard time finding someone that had any real problems with the 4L80. I did have the pump replaced under warranty for a intermittant neutral launch issue. The tech that replaced it said he would have to find something else to work on for a living if all GM made was the 4L80. The 4L60 is putting his kids through college......
I am over 450lbft easy and drive it hard. No problems.

If you want to look at the GM Powertrain Hydramatic Transmission web site, here is the link http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpower...apps/index.htm. From there, just click on the 4L60E/65E link and 4L80E/85E link. The torque ratings for the gear box are important as to what the transmission will take in terms of not shelling out gears or breaking shafts, etc. The engine torque ratings are what the manufacturer recommends to keep the friction components (clutches, etc) durable for 80,000 miles or more in "normal driving."

In general the 4L80E which is derived from the Turbo Hydramatic 400 three speed is nearly bullet proof even in stock form. Go to any transmission shop where they have some rebuilt exchanges ready to install in vehicles and look at the physical difference in size/weight and talk to the folks in the shop. However, with your 5.3 and the current level of mods in your signature line, I wouldn't even consider changing my transmission. Now, depending on what you do in the future, that might be a consideration. The 4L60E (which is derived from the TH300/350 three speed) can be rebuilt into a 4L65E and heavier aftermarket clutches and other components with the hydraulic pressures raised in the shift servos (shift kit type changes). This turns the 4L60E into a very "stout piece." Look at the Lingenfelter web site. They rebuild the LS1/LS6 and our truck engines to produce huge amounts of HP and torque and they recommend their transmission rebuild. Look at what they have done with the RADIX Hummer H2 (which weighs 6,000 pounds and has the 4L65E).
