Well I got the 4L80 in and running. Strapped it on the dyno for tuning. Made 2 pulls trying to get timing and air/fuel right. Third pull the drive shaft shattered into 3 peices and cracked the casing of the transmission. All that work down the drain, and have to buy new transmission again.

Man ... that sucks! At least you got everything ready so all you have to do is slide in a new trans.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Been there, done that, sorta. When I was first putting the '80 in my truck it fell off the trans jack as I was tring to put the safety chain on. Broke the housing in 8 pieces. So I checked around and found a used case for $350. Then I noticed that the pieces fit tightly back together like a jigsaw puzzle so I hauled it to the local welder and he said he could fix it if he had a block to bolt it up to so I hauled one of my extra blocks to him and 2 days and $315 worth of labor later I was putting it in.

2 flyweels and 1 crankshaft later and I determined that $350 for a case wasn't such a bad idea after all !! The '80 I bought was supposed to only have 30,xxxmi but when I pulled it down to swap cases I found lotsa smoked parts so I guess it was a good thing I pulled it apart when I did.

So what were the dyno numbers???

Get a denny's driveshaft next time, sounds like the shaft didn't want to spin that fast.

What gears did you have in the reareand?

Yes Im goin to order a dennys drive shaft on Monday. The gears are 3.73s. On the pull that it blew up the drive shaft it did 401 hp with only 17degrees of timing in it when i usually have about 21.

I'm guessing it's the aluminum driveshaft? Sorry to hear about the trans.
