Default 4l80e vs 4l60e?

i'm going to buy a performance transmission soon (within the next couple of weeks) and was wondering if it is possible or worth stepping up to a modified 4l80e or should i stick with a modified 4l60e?

prety sure it can be done but it seems like someone told me close to 5k for a project like that. not sure what you are doing to your truck but they are making these 4L60E prety tuff these days. what have you done or what are you going to do?

if your thinking of a bottle fed 422 with all the goodies then it might be worth the upgrade but they are about 100lbs heavier and the gear ratios are not as good.

i guess the answer is to stick with the 4l60e. all i plan to do is bore the block and probably add a supercharger.

$5000 sounds kinda steep. I imagine you could get a 4L80E from a wrecking yard relatively cheap. Get the proper trans. lines and wiring hookups(May not be needed) from a HD truck. Then you could find a hipo rebuild kit and install it yourself before you swapped the trans. in.

I emailed Chuck at FLP to see if there was a transbrake setup for the 4L80E and he said no. I may still go with a 4L80E though since I know power is addictive and I'll probably want more later down the road. I'm pretty sure there are options for the gear ratios.

I just don't think a 4L60E is gonna hold up very long behind alot of power in these heavy trucks.

Anybody know what a used 4L80E goes for?

silent1 - GMC SKI is running a built trans behind his supercharged motor. I think the 4L60E can probably handle 450rwhp fine but, after that its up in the air.

XLR8NSS- i've actually done some looking around and found some built 4l60e's that are supposed to handle up 650ft/lbs at the flywheel that is, not at the wheels. one was a raptor trans, i saw this one at www.transmissioncenter.net the other was a hellfire at www.netgearhead.com - check 'em out and see what you think. they have pretty decent pricing.

Yeah, I've seen the claims of holding that much power. I just don't think the trans. will hold up for very long at those power levels. The hard parts probably are fine but, the clutches probably look like they've been put in a toaster oven relatively quickly.

With 450rwhp you could probably go for an acceptable(relative, some people are real hardcore) time period before an overhaul.

I've seen claims that the 4L80E can be built to take up to 1000hp but, haven't heard of to many people running this trans. I've heard of a few hot rods(retrofit) that run it in the past but, never a beefed up GM truck.

I may try the 80 in the future if its not too costly to swap in.(I don't think it will be)

My buddy's Typhoon has a 4L80E that is builtup stout, has a TCI computer controlling it. Still AWD with an NP205 transfercase. Has 490rwhp at low boost, mild tune, with many WOT blasts, hasn't missed a beat. Tranny is holding up great so far. We're expecting to make 800+ rwhp down the road, and hoping it will hold up.

Kinda one of those things though, with the price. If you have to ask, it's too much. Still... a couple 4L60E rebuilds and you are right there with the price. It is a bit longer than a 4L60E I believe, so driveshafts may need to be retooled.

Was built by Roadmaster's in Schaumburg IL, FYI.
