Default 5.3 Exhaust Question

I recently ordered O2 Simulators for my 2002 5.3, and i removed my cats and welded in a straightpipe. I also have a 40 series flowmaster muffler...single in/dual out with turndowns past axle...well this made for a really really loud combonation, anyway to quiet it down a little it has a really annoying vibrating during certain acceleration points? Do these trucks really pick up that much from removing the cats? any help would be greatly appreciated..thanks

Do what JWRENCH said get a better sound quality muffler. Those flowmasters seem to cause alot of resonance in the cabb, so pick up a better sound quality muffler and run the pipes all the way out(nothing wrong wth flowmaster they just seem to make alot of interior noise). Part of the reason it was so loud was because it was exiting right under the truck, therefore causing alot of interior noise. Once you get the pipe ran out to the desired location on your truck it will be like night and day.

Hey JWRENCH you still want to meet up some time so I can check your ride out???

So any known power gains? my exhaust goes to almost the end of my truck, and turns down right before the bumper. so they make certain mufflers that will still be loud and aggressive sounding but be quiet in the cab? thanks

It's been a real bitch for me trying to find moderatly quiet with good flow. My truck is on its fourth muffler and the guy at the shop just shakes his head when he sees me now. I've never seen an engine as picky about losing either bottom or top end as these are. One way to kill the resonance is to weld in a 3" X 12" dynomax bullet race muffler just behind the y-pipe up front. But then the engine starts to nose over at around 5200. Right now I've got a mandrel bent 3" intermediate pipe and dynomax single in/dual out muffler with dual 2.5" tail pipes out the side. It gives up some torque way down low, but it pulls hard to 6000 and it doesn't resonate very much. All I can say is you just have to try differant things until YOU are happy with the combonation. Good luck!

If you can stomach the idea of putting a ford part on your truck, go to the ford dealer and get a muffler for a 99 and up lightning. It has 2 2.5 ins and 2 2.5 outs and has a little sound to it but no resonance. It flows really good-go look at some of the lightning message boards and see what kind of numbers they are putting down with the stock exhaust. I love mine.

I had the same problem.I solved it putting a Dynomax 3" racing muffler in front of the Flowmaster muffler. No restriction quieter and removed some of the metallic sound common to louder Flowmaster mufflers.

Anyone heard anything about Magnaflow, i dont really want to have 2 mufflers....and i dont want to spend 800 bucks either....I heard most people are using a single in/out 3 inch system....is it true that our trucks pick up more with a single exhaust sytem than a dual setup

I've heard that any more than 3" is too much flow. I have a Flowmaster single in dual 2.5" out and it flows too much. Not to mention it killed the low end.
