Is the engine actually running hot or do you simply have a bad sensor? I'm leaning toward bad sensor on this one. 285* = PSSSSSSHBOOOM. The surge tank cap will be long gone and the coolant will have boiled away; that's if you don't explode something first.

Nothing wrong with the gauge here. Put a new coolant temp sensor in and report back. $22 part.
