5.3L Towing capabilities
Not sure if this is the right forum, but ...
I have a 2004 Avalanche Z71 (1500) with 3.73 gearing.
I am looking at a 5900 lb travel trailer. The truck is rated at 7100 lbs. with the current gearing. I am considering regearing to 4.10 which should get me to an 8000 lb tow rating (should have done this from the factory )
I have added a B&M TOC, going to get a 160 degree thermostat, corvette servo/billet 4th servo and a custom tune. Should I go ahead and do a shift kit as well?
please provide opinions/experience

You should be able to tow with ease with you set up. Couple of suggestions is to run an equalizer hitch, and if possible find out you tongue weight. It should be a minimum of 10% of trailer weight. Finally, I would flush and fill brake fluid at the beginning of each season.
I tow a 24 ft enclosed trailer with a 5.3L and 3.73 gears, and the corvette servo, billit OD and headers make it much easier to tow. Final suggestion is to get a good tune for towing from Nelson or the other vendors.

thanks for the suggestions. The guy at the trailer place showed me the weight distribution setup, and it comes with anti sway bars as well. has an electronic break control too.
My biggest concern is the 4L60E. Sounds like I'm heading down the right path.

i have a 03 1/2 ton with 5.3 and 3.73. i own a 27 ft travel trailer about the same weight you are looking at. i can pull it just fine no probs at all. however i agree with the pack. i have weight distribution and sway bars and have no problems what so ever!

for whatever reason, the 4x4 Avalanche with 3.73 is only rated at 7000lbs. I could regear to 4.10 and get an 8000lb rating, but not sure I need it.

i wouldn't worry about it. as far as specs go, the SS's are only supposed to tow up to 7800lbs. and they have a bigger motor. personally i don't think you will need the 4.10's, you will be suprised at how well the 3.73's will handle.

Unless you are on a level road you may have to tow in 3rd on the gear select. My TC locks up like this and i just cruise at higher rpms. I always do this with the 4L60 to stop the gear hunting. I think your gears are just fine.

The billit OD servo will help keep you in overdirive on most rolling hills, especially at 76 mph or more. On a steep incline, use 3rd or be propared for the downshift/OD cycle. A good towing tune also helps the TM from making your life miserable.
