Easiests way to knock that factory timing gear off is with an air chisel if youre knot going to reuse it. It will vibrate it right off in half a second

As far as the cam bearings they all should have an oil pin hole and facing 6:00

I just pulled the cam back out to double check. All of the cam bearings have one hole that matches up to an oil hole in the block. I couldn't see, so used a wire to "feel" that they were aligned correctly.

I only got to work on it part of the day, but made good progress. My goal was to get the oil pan on, and I did. You can sure tell this engine came from Michigan! All that lousy salt corrosion


LS2 timing set from Yank.






Melling 10295 pump.




Rod clearances were about .0015" on 3 of the journals, and closer to .002" on the back journal, still well in spec. Side clearances were about .016".



Ring gaps were .018"-.020".




Oil ring ends.




The iron compression ring.




Chrome top ring.




All dots towards the front.




Block plug and cam sensor. I'll remove the sensor when I paint the block.




I poured a little oil in the pump before installing the pickup tube.




I've got the pickup tube with the stepped end, which takes the fatter green ring.






Setting flush before installing the bolt.






Dumbell installed in oil gallery.




Rear seal and cover installed.




The front cover installed, but not tightened down untill I install the balancer.

Uhg, all that corrosion. I'll probably pull it back off and bead blast it.

Anyone have a recommendation for an affordable catch can? How about this one? LINK. Wonder if these would just be cheap junk? LINK, LINK. I also considered going with a simple air line filter, LINK. I only drive my truck about 5K miles/year, so capacity isn't an issue.

I used an airline filter for a short while before I switched to the AMW can that I currently run. It filled up quickly and bypassed the filter.

Any quality cans like the AMW that are less expensive? If not, I guess it is what it is. Do any sponsors sell them?

I was going to say that Norris Motorsports has a couple of Billet PCV catch cans that are less expensive than the AMW, but even as such they are at least over double the cost of what you've just paid.

Where are you going to be installing the can? Just between the PCv tubes?
