6.0 LQ? what's the difference?
I have been reading the posts as I am a newbie here and see LQ4 and LQ8 ( I think it was maybee LQ6" I am guessing one is in the standard 3/4HD the other Denali, etc. Could be wrong. What exactly is the difference or is ther any as far as internals go. I have posted earlier I am considering a swap into a 5.3 ext cab sb4 x4 and plan to use the 5.3 intake, PCM, etc.. if there is a difference as far as intake, etc that would be an advantage maybee i should be a little picky about the motor I use. What I am looking at now is an '03 6.0, don't know option code, with 1400 miles on it and giving $2k for it. Prices I hear on here it isn't sounding good. Please advise either way and info as far as which motor would be appreciated.
Thanks,
michael

From What I Know, But Dont Quote Me On This... Lq9 Is What Is In An Escalade Only. Lq9 Is 6.0 Block With Ls6 Heads On Them. I Know This For Sure Cuz Thats What I Just Got And Putting In My Truck. Lq4 Comes In 3/4 Ton Trucks. I Dont Know Of Lq8's Or Lq6's. And I Am Not Sure What Comes In Denalis Or H2's.
I Worked At Cadi Dealer And Got Motor, Tranny, Comp. , And Wiring Harness For $2600 Out Of Rearend Totaled Escalade Esv. As Far As I Am Concerned If You Can Find Any Kind Of 6.0 For Under $4000 Pick It Up. Look Out For Better Prices But Anything Under Is A Steal.

The LQ4 is the "regular" 6.0...it's the one that's good for super/turbochargers because of the lower compression, you'll find it in 2500LD's 2500HD's, 3500HD's, and most Vans and Chassis Cab trucks
The LQ9 is the "HO" motor, it's what is in the VHO, the SS, the Escalade, and the Denali......with it's 10.1:1 compression its got a higher output in stock form but doesn't handle boost very well

gotta love the misinformation on here...
there is 2 versions of the 6.0 iron block motor, lq4 is the lower output usually installed in the regular silvarado 2500 trucks and uses different PISTON/RODS only... the rest of the parts including HEADS/CAM/INTAKE etc are the same as the HO version LQ9 which is installed on the Caddy trucks and other performance stuff like the silverado SS.. The LQ9 is also offered as a crate motor from GM and it would seem alot of guys could learn something by getting a copy of the $5 GMPP book... the reason for the HP rating difference in the 2 engines is from 2 things, the first is that the PISTONS are different for the LQ4 they have a dish which lowers the compression to use regular 87 type crap gas since they are the work truck engine, the HO LQ9 if anyone has read their owners book uses slightly higher compression and requires premium unleaded (91octane) That and a different Tune in the PCM which uses more aggressive timing, again thanks to the use of high octane gas, and changes the max engine rpm to 5600 vs 5200 on the LQ4 motor.. That said, they are very close and alot could be done with an aftermarket tune or any parts you choose to install.. It would seem the LQ4 is a better choice if you wish to go with a serious power adder, however the LQ9 would be a great choice is you just want to do bolt ons and a tune up... I think either way the condition of the actual used motor you're looking at is much more important than which version it actually is... Good luck

Thanks for all of the responses. LQ9 was the other was trying to remeber obviously. Planning just air intake and maybee a cat back exhaust and a PCM tune for mods. Sounds like it would a small advantage to run the LQ9 if I ca come across one for a good price. If not the other will be fine as well.
Thanks again
