What's the trick to removing the dipstick tube in an iron 6.0L truck block without destroying it or the block????

Remove the bolt holding it the head, then turn and pull up and it should come right out. That is how I've done it many times...

I destroyed my first one that hadn't been removed since original.

But yeah, unbolt it and try and rotate it to get it free then pull out. Some penetrating oil wouldn't hurt.

Thanks, penetrating oil didnt help and the rusty spot in the tube about halfway down the tube didnt help either. Its lower half is still in there and the upper half is now out in the field. Damn damn damn...

The bottom piece of the dipstick has a tendancy of breaking and falling into the oil pan. Once you get it out, you might check if this happened.

hah, sure u didnt weld it to the starter like my dad almost did in my 4.8 today? I'd recommend disconnecting the battery. Mine had a drop of oil on the end touch the starter and a cloud of smoke shot in my face, then we disconnected the battery, haha, we were lucky

Sounds like my first one. Now that its destroyed. Option 2. I had to put a set of vice grips with a slide hammer attached and pull it out.

The area around the tube looked like this was a saltbath test block for GM. Rusty bit$h. Slide hammer didnt work either, I needed to bring out the big guns. I cut the tube down to about 1/4 inch then I took a 12" long wood screw that fit the hole pretty good and took my mig welder and welded the screw in the remaining chunk of the tube. Clamped the visegrips onto the welded area and the block gave up the fight and let the tube go. Here are some pictures...
