Default 8.1, 6 speed allison

Was looking on e bay and there are just a few 07 models on there.. I noticed the 8100 now have listed the 6 speed allison with the "paddel" shift option on the shifter.

Just wondering if anyone has driver one and what kind of difference it makes. Also do you know if spits the gears some place or is it just two over drives now...

I have one. I like it. I think it shifts smoother than my 05 diesel I had. Basically, the trans is exactly the same as the 5 speed, they just added another overdriven gear. 5 gear was overdriven, and 6th is overdriven 10% more than fifth. At 75, I am at about 2000 rpms with 265/75rR16 tires, and 4.10 gears. Mine is a 3500 SRW, so it came with 265's stock.
The 8.1's are no more as of Jan 1st. To bad, I really like that engine.

Doesn't the allison come with 3.73 gears in the rear? What kind of mileage do you get with that set up? What are they going to replace the 8.1 with?!

If you have a D-max, you have to get 3.73 gears. But, with the 8.1, you got a choice of those or 4.10's. For the gas burner, the 4.10 are the way to go.

I think they are offering a hopped up version of the 6.0. It is supposed to have almost as much torque as the 8.1, but we all know, there isn't any substitute for cubic inches.

If I keep my foot out of it, I can get around 13. If I play, it is about 11.

thanks for the info.. we have a 04 crew cab 6.0 with the 4:10... I just want a bigger motor... but dont want a diesel...

That extra gear helps with the rpms and milage i bet...

I read the info on the 6.2 it like 380 hp and 395 lbtq or something like that... far cry from the 455? or what ever the big block makes... that and nothing sound like a big block with parts

if you want the 8.1L in an 07 or newer you will have to buy a 4500 series truck. GM eliminated the 8.1L in the 2500 and the 3500 body styles

and i think the 8.1L only has 350hp @ 3200 rpm / 450 tq @3200 rpm....

also i think the pre 2006 models the allison was a 800 series, the new ones are a 1000 series....some correct that if its worng im a little unsure of the tranny models

Actually, the Allison 1000 was in all the 8.1 and diesels. I had a 2001 8.1, and two dmaxes with Allison's and they were all the same trans. Other than the fact that I have another gear in the 2006, the trans looks and acts just like the old ones.

I didn't realize you could still order an 07 classic. That would be the only way to get an 8.1, or find one on a lot somewhere. Hopefully, they will bring it back in 08.

Quick Reply: 8.1, 6 speed allison
