I didn't realize you could still order an 07 classic. That would be the only way to get an 8.1, or find one on a lot somewhere. Hopefully, they will bring it back in 08.

yeah i wasnt including the classic models...sorry

with the fuel prices on the rise i doubt theyll bring it back....but GM has done stranger things

The paddle shifter is basically called " manual mode" You can select which gear you want while in man. mode. Say your cruising in 6th gear down the road , you can hit the minus ( -) button and shift down or if you are taking off and want to just wind out each gear you can by tapping up on the plus ( +) button. Its nice too cuz you can select 5th or 4th from take off and you wont shift into 6th which is nice for keeping the RPM's up around town.

I'm no expert but I've driven the 5 speed and the 6 speed and I thought there was a world of difference between the two. They did a lot more than just add another overdrive to it. They also messed with the ratios so all of the shifts "meshed" together better. It wasn't alot but it is much more refined than the the 5 speed(and that wasn't a bad tranny by any means)

Actually, the first 5 gears in the 6 speed are the exact same ratios as the 5 speed. What they have done is refined the computer that runs the new six speed. The Diesels in 2006 have a 32 bit processor and I think the 8.1's still have the 16 bit, but I am not sure.
One of the things that I love about the Allison is that when you are standing hard on the throttle, the rpm only drops about 500 RPM during shifts which keeps you in the torque band.

thanks guys,

My dad traded his 05 Denali for the 07 with the 6 speed and its 10% quicker. however the new denali has that 6.2 motor also...

Justlooking at my options vs price vs trans...

The dealer had a 6 speed manual used that i drove a few months ago. It sucked, i think the truck had been abused its hole life. You never could figure out what gear you where in. You could slide the shifter in any gear then move the stick 4-5 inches (in gear) side to side. So you had no clue if you where Low or 3ed..

If you want to get one, you better start looking hard right now. You can't order the Classics anymore, we tried. My dad and I had a Chevy dealership in Houston do a search for a 2500HD crewcabs and extended cabs 4x4 with 8.1 and there were none to be found in a 500 mile radius. He found two extended cab 2wd's near Houston. We went to a GMC dealer and he found a couple of crewcabs, but my dad didn't like the colors of them, so he settled for the '07 GMC regular cab 2500HD 4x4 that he found in Central Texas. He just got it last Friday, so no word on mileage or anything yet. It's got 3.73 gears and the six speed Allison.

The shift buttons are on the shifter.

Don't know if you can convert it to a 4L60/80 or not.

Any truck with a 4L-80E doesn't have the paddle shift setup. It is only for the allison.
