If the 8.1l is a wast. Point out any 6l that has powered a 7000lbs truck deep into the 12's like my 8.1l did. I've seen a few 6l powered HD as fast or slightly faster but they all weighed 1000lbs lighter than my truck.

Like Neil 6.0 states it’s because of their torque output at relatively low rpms. The desired rpm in marine applications is generally 4500-5000 rpm at which point a 8.1 or 8.2 is going to makes tremendous power. A built 6L is going to want 6000+ rpm which isn't practical for longevity in marine applications.

I don't think anyone is saying the 8.1 is a waste in a HD truck just that it isn't worth the time or money to put one in a 1/2 ton RCSB.

What is interesting is that Chevy doesn't think the big block is necessary because it is no longer offered in the HD trucks.

LOL definitely not worth the time! It isn't like the old days where you just drop a BB in a half ton. Now you got hack in cut the frame to get one to fit. And yes some where doggin on the 8.1l.

I don't even want to get into dealerships BS and not keepin 8.1l on the lots to force people to upgrade to a Dmax.

Put it all together.

Bottom line is that after you go through all the work to put the 8.1 in a 1/2 ton, your going to be limited on what kind of mods you can do as the market just isn't that vast for the 8.1. With all the options available to mod the 6.0 you'll end up with more power and it's a drop in swap.
I'd imagen it would be a sweet ride if you had as much of a market as the small blocks do. If you could mod the 8.1 as far as you can the small blocks, the 8.1 would be the better, but it's not going to happen.

swapability to modability, the 6.0 has the advantage. The dmax is more worth it than the 8.1 as the market is really opening up for diesel's.

Same debate with an ls7 swap. Once you spend the money to do it, you could have built a badass 6.0 that gets you down the track faster.

see i have to say something about the LS7 compared to the Stroked 6.0s if you add the cost of the two they would be similar. if you could find a boneyard LS7 it owuld be cheaper then a high dollar 408.

Default No aftermarket?

Here's what I've been able to accumulate for my 8.1 truck that has no aftermarket and costs too much. Almost all of it came from Ebay auctions with a few from the board ads.

Volant box $120
Granetelli Maf $100
BBK Throttle $100
Whipple supercharger kit $2500
HP3 cnc'd cylinder heads new $785
Stainless Works 2" headers $495
Duramax Radiator/Intercooler kit homemade by "Whippled 496" $750
Marine injectors $160?
Hypercrap programmer free with truck
AFPR came on truck free
True dual Magnaflow for existing 3" duals $300
E85 $2.25 a gallon at Krogers
4.56's front and rear sets like new $220?

I think that's the jist of it, the rest is supporting or chassis appearance mods. I'm really good at Ebay and patient. I'm getting a cam next, plenty to choose from priced at $325. Then I'll tear the engine down and install the heads,SC, headers, cam etc.

Right now with just the bolt on crap and programmer I regularly outrun stock 6.0 trucks and diesels that dare. I'm about 50/50 on the modded small blocks. I've never had any SUV give me a challenge 6.0, hemi, whatever. Ricer rods are a laugh. That and my damn 2500HD 4x4 Crew Cab truck wieghs 7,000 lbs plus and many times we're packed 6 deep in the seats when we leave someone. I wouldn't have a small block in this truck unless I had no choice. Now would I put a 8.1 into a 6.0 1500, probably not but only because the 6.0 is so moddable. Into a V6 truck hell yes. Would I think doing it was a waste of time, hell no. It would be one bad **** running unique truck.

HP3 cnc'd cylinder heads new $785.......so one set of heads compared to how many others?
Stainless Works 2" headers $495.........good price and worth it. but are there other companys?
Duramax Radiator/Intercooler kit homemade by "Whippled 496" $750
Marine injectors $160?
Hypercrap programmer free with truck...........not worht the dime
AFPR came on truck free..........not a performance gain mod
True dual Magnaflow for existing 3" duals $300..........duals can be had for any vehicle
E85 $2.25 a gallon at Krogers
4.56's front and rear sets like new $220?
