Default 8.1L vs. old big block

What's the difference (ie: the long block)? What things are cross compatible?

Same. Exhaust manifolds, bell housing, flex plate, starter, cams but firing order is different, it has previsions for old style engine mounts.
Different. All the accessories and bolt pattering for accessories.
That all I can think of for now.

Are the cylinder head bolt patterns the same (i.e. head-to-block/intake-to-head)? How is the ignition system/timing setup (distributer or is it reluctor wheels like the LS1s?)

You can use older Gen V/Gen VI cylinder heads on a 496 with slight mods.

The coolside 2 pickup is an example.

Since (from what I understand) the 8.1L was an option for the 3/4ton silvs, wouldn't it be pretty much a direct swap (ie: just change motor mounts and any accessories)? How does the 8.1L deal with timing (distributer or reluctor rings)?

That Coolside II is one bad *** truck! Was it ever sold to the public or was it just a "concept" truck?

It was just a concept truck, similar to what they did with the Coolside I....GM likes to tease us truck guys lol. I'm not sure if they still do it, but it used to show up at a lot of big car-shows around the country. I remember it being at Auto-Rama a couple of years ago....definitely a sick truck!
