Default Advice for a newb

Ok I would appreciate some advice, here is the deal. I have a 2003 2500HD crew cab short box, I am trying to decide if I want to build a motor for it. I would probably buy a used LQ4 tear it down and rebuild it, I want a 11.5 to 12 sec truck.

Could it be done with $10,000 just for the build not including buying the used motor, would it get me close or am I dreaming? I am trying to decide if I want to do this or buy another Duramax and go diesel instead, for about that much in mods I can have a 550-600 hp mid to low 12s truck. But to go any faster would be a lot more.

Thanks for any input.

The problem is with a good diesel build you are looking at $25,000 and up, and I already have my wifes 09, and now she wants twins So I was looking for a fast truck at a lower price point, I just don't know what parts cost and what would be required. That is why I am asking for advice before I spend a lot of time researching on a build, to see if it is even feasible.

Why start with a 2500 crew cab thats gonna be heavy as hell?

It can be done for that money though. Heads, cam, blower or turbo, and you will see 12's even in that heavy thing.

Main reason is it is paid for and the trans has started having a intermittent issue, so I will have to rebuild it soon. I figured I could beef up the trans and go custom TC, and do some suspension work. I could do the build this next winter and when finished swap it into the truck and sell my currant engine. I am not a mechanic but I should be able to figure it out, any recommendation on manuals or books to get?

good enough for me.

You'll need forced induction. Pick which one will be best for you, and go from there.'

You you use the truck when not playing will be very important here. For instance if you cant afford to have a loose converter (in such a heavy truck that sounds like no fun anyway...) then that changes the game.

Theres a lysholm 2300 blower on here for sale now that would be a great start int eh right direction. I'd grab that.
