Default allison transmission?

This is probably a really stupid question, but I've been hearing about the allison transmissions alot in chevy's advertisements, and was wondering what kind of tranny this is? Is it only for the heavy duty trucks, will it go in the light duty 1500's, is it close to/the same as the 4l80e? Just curious......

i'm sure others know alot more about it than i do. as far as i know it's only available behind the duramax. i believe allison manufactures heavy duty industrial and farm equipment. test drove the diesel, loved the tranny, when you back off the gas it downshifts and slows you down. great for towing, never heard anyone bitch about one breaking. would have got it, but my wife did'nt dig the diesel noise and she's in it almost as much as i am. the supercharger was the compromise. still wish i had that trans though. and i don't believe it's anything like the gm trans. e

You don't want it behind any truck that you want to go fast in. It eats up around 36% hp. The Dmax guys keep it becasue its the only trany that will live up to the insane torque of a modded diesel. For any gasser, all you need is a 4l80e. When built properly the 4l80's will live with 1000hp

Allison is a company that is owned by GM they make trany for trucks, buses, and construction eqt. The one used in pickups are hugh compared to a 4L80E and they do rob a lot of power. I have 14 over the road trucks with Allison 4060P most have gone 1,000,000 miles be for being rebuilt. A couple have been problem childs.

I'm an Allison tech at an International dealership. I only live about 70 miles from Pacific Detroit, which is located a few miles south of Seattle, WA and designs and manufactures both the Detroit diesels and the Allison automatics. I've been to 3 Allison schools so consider myself fairly knowledgable on the subject.

The 1000/2000/2400 series of trannys that you're talking about do NOT eat up 36% of your power. If they did then the 8.1,which can be optioned with the 1000 series Allison ( the same one that's comes behind the Duramax ) would wind up with much less power than the 6.0/4L80E combo has and they wouldn't make it.

The 4L80E is a 4 speed/lockup tranny that's pretty strong, but the 1000 series Allison is a 6 speed capable tranny that's much stronger and much more sophisticated. It's used as a 5 speed in GM pickups and is a very efficient tranny. Most people don't realize it, but you can swap the gear sets out of a 2400 series tranny to get lower geared 1-4 gears for getting out of the hole better.
