Default Another cam question Wahoo!!

Due to recent money constraints I am not going to be able to swing the 6L swap so I am going to go ahead and just dump a cam into the 5.3 to hold me over till tax return time next year when I will have the funds to do the 6L swap. I want a cam that is going to give me decent driveability with good power from about 3000 up. I will have a 3400 stall in my truck so stall is not an issue. I am thinking of a Comp Cams Xtreme RPM High Lift 222/224 .566/.568 112. Will this be a good DD cam? I am not big on cam specs and how they relate to driveability. I want something with a good lope and that will react decently well to the nitrous. Tuning is not an issue since I will drive to San Antonio to get Allen to tune my truck.

'Daily Driver' characteristics seem to vary wildly between people. At one end of the spectrum you have me, who wants stock idle (600 RPM's) and zero lag between idle and power application. At the other end you have people who believe that, as long as it doesn't stall, it is a 'Daily Driver', which for many F-Body enthusiasts, means a 4500 RPM stall and a T-Rex cam.

You will have to decide what is okay with you and what you are willing to sacrifice as far as driving characteristics go. A 222/224 cam in a 5.3L means you are going to have a dead dog on your hands until what, 3000 RPM's? (cam guys, help me here) If you don't mind living between 3000 and 6000 RPM's, then I guess you will have your daily driver with that cam.

Ya.. in a 5.3 it will wake up around 2800 or so and than should pull pretty hard till about 6500 or more... but you will lose a little low end. I expereienced this with my little engine and the tr224... but i like it as a daily driver.. in order to squeez out 18mpg... i have to drive like a granny and try hard not to let it shift over 2k rpms... hopefully with a good tune for the fuel tables you should have no problems with massive gas consumption... (massive being like 12mpg or less )

as far as driveability.. i really like it... i dont stall out ever and you shouldnt either with a good tune, but its really an indivduals preference on wether you like it or not.

Daily driveability to me is something that will get decent gas mileage(12 or so) and wont constantly downshifting all the time for power as in when the tc is locked up and going up a slight hill and it dropping into 3rd all the time. Right now around town I get a 13.5 or so. I want something with a good lope to it. Will this cam produce decent power down low? I am going to be adding ls1 fans, dynatech lt headers, bbk tb and getting it retuned around the same time as the camswap. With those extra mods do you think they will make up for what I lose down low? I still need to be able to tow decently well and if by adding those other mods will keep me at about the same power level as before the cam then that will be fine.

if your going to tow than get no bigger than a 2800 stall. But I think that will work out well for you. I didnt realize this was a ex cab, so when i seen the low mpg numbers, i was thinking to myself, gee thats low but your way heavier, so it makes sense... Some of the cam gurus might be able to come in and shed some more light on it for you.. but my instincts are to go for it.

Everyone is telling me to go with a smaller stall but Io towed with my TCI 3000 and never once had it overheat on me even in stop and go traffic in 95* weather and pulling 6000#s. I have a 40,000GCVW tranny cooler that does the trick. When I get me efans on I am going to get Allen to wire in a pigtail for some fans on the tranny cooler so I can turn them on if it starts to get hot in stop and go traffic.

I have used comp cams and am going bigger, but I found out you can get a Lingenfelter 222/222 .566/.566 112 for about $250, unless it was a mis print, but thats what it said on their website. Good luck. Sorry to hear about the 6.0, but now I may not be the slowest at the shootout.

oh okay.. well if you've done it before and are doing the right assisting mods.. like you said, large tranny cooler, fully funcitonal e-fans.. than go ahead and do the 3000-3200 stall, i was always told to be careful of stall size for towing.. but it sounds like you have no problem.

Well if I cant tow something cause its too heavy one of my buddy's has a 02 dodge cummins that can handle it but I really dont do any real heavy duty towing just mainly 5000#s and under.
