Another new guy looking for help
I've been lurking around for ahile, but never joined the forum because I wasn't
sure I'd be all that helpful to you guys. But now I need a few suggestions for some help.
I'v got a 2000 Suburban 2WD, 5.3 and a 2001 Silverado SWB 2WD, 5.3.
With gas prices going like they are, I'm hoping to get a little help with finding ways to increase the gas mileage on my rides. The Sub has a K+N filter and the truck has a K+N FIPK. They're otherwise stock. I use Mobil 1 oil.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I've been thinking electric fan(s), pulleys, mufflers, etc..., but I am on a budget with this stuff.
By the way, I've been reading some of the topics on engine changes and
performance and I must say it's very tempting to go nutz with my p/u and have some fun. But, these are my daily drivers and my fun ride is a plastic
Chevy I drive like I stole, then hide it in the garage. I do wanna lower the Silvy w/ cool wheels. I'm getting a little older and it's alot easier to load stuff into a low truck than into a high one.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give.

Improve MPG
LT headers and a tune from Nelson or Westers would be your best mods for increased MPG.(as well as a good power boost). Mine increased 2 MPG with these bolt ons. Easy to install yourself and my SOTP sure feels the improvement, especially the low end boost!

You can order PCM with a power tune, economy tune or a combination of both. I think they are around $300 for your suburban.

My truck is a bi-fuel and I gained .5 mpg with Westers 87 octane tune with a combination of economy and performance tunning. LT headers gave me 1.5 mpg increase. Post your findings on your decrease in mpg when you find out what the cause is.

If you are really that concerned with gas mileage only, save the mod money you would be spending and buy gas with it. $1000 will by more gas than $1000 in mods would save in a lifetime.

Even if you saved 2mpg, which is alot, do the math. 2mpg (on a 15mpg truck which is average) times an average of 15gallons a week. You would save 30 miles or 2 gallons of fuel per week. Around here, gas is $2.20 a gallon on average. You would save $4.40 a week. I would take 227.27 weeks or over 4 years just to save back the money you spent on mods. By then, the headers would be rusted out, you would have sold the truck, the fan VSC would have went up who knows how many times, etc, etc, etc.....not to mention the headaches that go along with any mods what so ever. I'm sure by now you see my point. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from modifying their truck, but I think modding a truck to save gas money is INSANE! If you want gas mileage, by something more fuel effiecient. And even at that point, unless you are replacing the truck with a more MPG friendly car, it still becomes a close call when you figure in insurance for the added vehicle and price of the car over the time you will have it. Oh ****, I'm starting to confuse myself, but the moral of the story is, "Perfoming mods to save gas money isn't worth it." That is my .02.
