Question anyone ever try a different water pump than stock...what works and why the swap?

Someone recently suggested that I try using a LS3 wp because the pulley is a better design. I looked into it this morning and from the thread below it seems that the spacing on the LS3 is not right BUT the wp from the L99 (GM PN 19207665 for 5th gen camaro VVT, 6.2 w/ automatic) may be. The upper radiator hose connection would be between the wp pulley and the idler on either so I don't know if it would work or not. I thought I read here at one time that someone used spacers with an LS3 wp though.
I think my pump design was used on 99-03 1500's and thru 04 on the 2500's...4.8/5.3/6.0.
Just starting up some discussion on this to see if anyone has actually made a wp swap of any kind and why.
Thanks for any input you may have.

See post #344 in this thread for a comparison between '07 LY6 and L99 pumps.
The LQ4 to LS3 is also compared on this same page of the thread.

The 99-03 truck water pump has been replaced and is now serviced by the 04-07 design. The only important change being the thermostat is now serviceable without the housing. To my knowledge there is no improvement to cooling or reliability by swapping to another w/p design, but may be done for increased clearance or compatability with a different serpentine set up.

^ Is the pulley on the 04-07 still pressed on?

EDIT: I just looked it up...same pressed on pulley...change in thermostat as you stated AND a smaller diameter water outlet

Looks like the LS3 and the L99 both have a pressed on pulley as well...just a different shaped pulley...can't really tell on the L99 from the pics in that thread I posted a link to above.

Yes. A tack weld could solve that though if you have really managed to twist one.

You run an electric John?
If so...pics please...
I thought of that a while back but looking at the belt routing it seems that with an electric wp you'd lose quite a bit of what little surface you have on the ps pump and lose a lot on the crank as well.

EDIT: Nevermind...just found this:
https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...r-pump-498504/

The idler relocation is required for using this pump, correct? Does the electric pump and idler relocation work with the ProCharger bracket?
If you have this, please post pics...or a link to them.
Thanks!

Not sure I follow. Got any pics of the failure and were they OEMs or aftermarket?

a guy here mentions using a electric w/p and procharger but doesn't go into detail.

never had a pump fail other than the pulley being snatched off...
the first one was the factory one with over 200k miles on it...
it was not tack welded and spun off the front...
next one was a new aftermarket pump...no tack weld...pulley spun off the front
third was a new aftermarket pump...WAS tack welded...factory weld @ threads broke and pulley spun off backwards...onto itself...
fourth one is the current new aftermarket pump...WAS tack welded...tensioner arm detached from spring housing (don't ask) causing belt to shred and wrap around the pump, snatching the pulley off...onto itself...this time it was a clean break outside of the factory weld...

thanks for the link...best I can tell though, that was with car accessories...
