Default anyone using vvt timing cover in non vvt application?

im trying to use the vvt timing cover with a standard cam. i have the 4x ls2 style cam gear. i wanted to know of the cam sensor will still be able to read the signal if the vvt timing cover is used?

Do you have a Gen3 or Gen4?

I THINK the covers are interchangeable on Gen3's if you use the correct bolts. Not sure about Gen4.

the pig tail is different . . . the VVT is a 4-5 pin and the regular LS2 style is a 3 or 4 pin? . . . I can't remember

no i don't mean that. i have a gen 4 LY6. i removed the vvt extension and the cam sensor is in the same spot as an ls2, except further out beacuse of the bulge in the cover. im talking about will the cam sensor read the cam gear or is it too far out in a vvt cover to be able to read it. i really don't want to hear speculation, just first hand experience.

see the cam sensor to the right of where he is pointing?

I'm completely aware of what your question is and what you are asking. I recently did a GEN 4 5.3 to a GEN 4 LY6 swap (5.3 to a 6.0 with L92 heads)

The non VVT cover is a 3 wire from the bottom to the sensor. The cam sensors "look" the same, but had different part numbers.

The VVT front cover is spaced out farther vs the LS2 cover and has 4 or 5 wires for it in the harness.

I installed the VVT cover on the new motor, with the orginal harness and orginal cam sensor.

The owner is currently having issues on startup. It will crank for 4-5 times before it fires. He's kind of green, so he doesn't really know why he's having issues. It was his decision to use the cover.

I've already suggested to use his orginal cam cover from the 5.3 on the new motor . . .

the vvt cover bulges out where the cam sensor is in order to read the cam phaser which is thicker. since i have a standard 4x cam gear, the cam sensor is too far away from the gear to pick up the signal. it's ok though, i don't need the cover because i'm using a carb and it doesn't affect my ignition timing, and my fuel is all controlled by me. it would only affect me if i was using EFI.
