Benefits of 160 t-stat?

What year/model/engine size truck do you have? Do you have efans? A 160* stat by itself, to a truck with a clutch fan won't do much but possibly run a few degrees cooler and take a little longer to heat up to an eventual 185-195*. I watched the data on my truck with a scan tool while running with a 180* stat and then with a 160* stat. One thing that I've noticed is that the engine running temp is a little inconsistent with the cooler stats and fan clutch. With my 160* stat and clutch fan, my truck would run anywhere between 185ish to just touching 202*. It usually ran around 187*-190* IIRC. With the factory stat and clutch fan, the truck consistently ran 195*-197*. Some times it would go up to 202* for a second, but quickly come back down.
Now with efans on the other hand, you can consistently control engine temps. I'm running a 160* stat and my fans come on at 177* and go off at 170*, and the truck consistently runs at about 175*. (My tuner told me that he set the fans to come on at 180* and off at 173*, but I like to hook up my scan tool and check the endine data from time to time and they consistently come on at 177* and off at 170*. When I have Justin from BlackBear retune my PCM I'll see what he recommends)
As for 160* stat benefits, you can run a little more timing since the engine is running cooler and lest prone to detonation, and your transmission will run a little cooler since the whole system is cooler. Theoretically the trans should even run cooler with the radiator bypassed and using an auxilary cooler, since it is bolted to the engine which will be cooler (heat transfer). A cooler stat isn't the kind of mod that you'll bolt on and get more power or anything like that.
If you do a search for "160* thermostat", or "160*", or "160* thermo", you will find pages and pages of info and debate about a 160* thermostat.
(BTW I bought my 160* stat from SLP)

Well i have an 09 silverado...yeah i pretty much knew i wasnt gonna get any horsepower out of it but i thought maybe if it ran cooler id get better mpg or something...so to get the full benefit of a tstat i would have to tune it?

From what I have read on here, just the 160 tstat alone won't net you much and can oftentimes hurt your MPG, you need to have a tuner tune your truck for the lower temp tstat. Search also for the "BB mod", which details how you can convert your stock tstat to a 160 one with just a simple BB.
