Here's a nice webpage with side by side on a 9"

http://www.sunrayengineering.com/nine.html

Interesting as well...

http://www.sunrayengineering.com/compare.html

5.13 R&P on the 9" and it's still huge!....so each step you go lower on the gears the ring gear get's thick and the size of the pinion gear gets smaller...right guys?

For those of you who have not seen a side by side compare of a 10 bolt and a 14 bolt w/9.5" R&P SF This 14 bolt is the same one they used on the Chevy 1/2 ton pickup from hell with the 454SS engine...also used some heavy 1/2 pickups and lite duty 3/4 tons (7200 gvw).

I'll have to do a tech page on this when I am done

Here are all the pics with measurements and weights:

Parish8...

After doing some thinking and calling this morning and talking to a few folks I decided to go with Randy's Ring and Pinion....I highly recommend Pete down there!

http://www.ring-pinion.com/standard-carriers.shtml

Also set myself up as a dealer with them Got some great prices on everything too... less than $700

Went with the following items:

4.56 (Yukon brand) HD gears front 8.2" and rear 9.5" (stronger than OEM)
Front bearing/installation kit front, already have the rears.
Yukon brand HD rear axles (25% stronger than stock) almost equal to stock 1 ton (14 bolt, 10.5") axles Also take over 150 tons of pressure to break the axle button where the c-clips go!

Eaton HD rear diff for 14 bolt 9.5" R&P...(on BO not paid for yet)

Going to upgrade my tires to 34" reason I decided to go with the 4.56's as well as my little half worn 32" BFG's look kind of funny with a 5" lift!...also they have not had any problems with breakage on the 9.5" Yukon 4.56 R&P gear sets on high HP/TQ engines...different story on the 8.5" 10 bolt.

Also regarding offroading....Even with the stock SC engine I never used 4LO when going off road...4HI was actually faster in the dirt...but 4LO would be a good rock crawling setup now with my new gears Thought about some kind of posi in the front, but I think I will be happy with a 3WD as I don't do that much off roading

Also may not run as much boost now with these gears which will keep everything together longer...reason I decided to upgrade the axles and diff to handle the extra torque of the gears! This will also put less strees on the trans, transfercase, driveline and joints (around 20% less).

I figured that the difference between the 3.73 gears and 4.56 gears is like having an engine that puts out 135 lbs more torque at the flywheel...with 4.10 gears it would be like having 60 lbs more torque at the flywheel...should be nice to stomp on it when on the freeway too as with the old 3.73 gears it did not pull very well above 75mph as I would like it to have Glad I maxed out the trans rebuild on the last OH as it's got everything Art Carr offers and then some!

Running 34" tires and 4.56 gears will have the same rpms as if it had 30" tires with 4.10 gears...could

110 MPH in 3rd gear with 32" tires, 157 mph 4th
117 MPH in 3rd gear with 34" tires, 167 mph 4th
Also I may need Ed Wright to reprogram my pcm to shift into 4th at WOT...he said he needed a mph in order to do it...on my 1996 it's not programed to do this as I found out once when I hit over 130mph and it did not want to upshift unless I let off the gas a bit.

Average speed where I drive to work two line road is 55-60mph, so rpms will be around 2000rpms at 60...old 3.73 gears was 70 mph at the same rps.

Hey, also got a good deal going at work at our police impound yard...what do you think about a 1991 Jeep Wrangler, 5sp inline six cyl with a removeable hard top in excellent condition for $1,000 Going to sell my 1987 Ranger to my boy (my backup transportation while the truck is down or if I do any other tare down mods)

3.73 are stronger would'nt short 26"tires give near the same gearing with less inertia to overcome. They work really good for me on my Tahoe.

i agree 26" tall tires would be the best for drag racing but i put 29" tall tires on my z71 and they were almost too short. i need to go larger than 29" on a 3/4 ton.
