I was just wondering what the best heads are for the 5.3, not sure when i'll be able to do it though. If i got my heads ported polished how much would it cost.

To do a stage 1 package which would include: bigger valves (stock seats), port/polish, new springs and retainers and labor. Your looking at anywhere from $1500 to $2200 depending on what components you use and how good the place is you get them done at.

Oh yea, stage 2 usually includes the above but with even bigger valves, new seats and parts upgrades and stage 3 is even more. But unless your stroking or going big cubes, stage 1 should be plenty. Bigger shot and some internal upgrades (forged), stage 2. Super stroker 400+ ci stage 3 to do it right.

What kind of gain would you see with a stage 1 head? what kinda gains would you see with a stage 1 head and a cam? from the looks of it , head work isn't cheap. You might as well spend 800 to 1000 more and get a s/c if the gains of head work are close to a s/c.

The stock heads on the 5.3 are very well designed and probley should be one of the last things you change. In stock form they won't cause any restrictions until 400 to 425 hp N/A hp is made. A word of caution if you machine your factory heads to much you may end up losing alot of bottom end torque, and gain un-usable high end horsepower. My advice would be leave the heads alone until you have done: cam, headers, intake, exhaust, ls1 edit, torque converter, injectors. Then your ready for a little head tweaking

RWHP numbers and some tunning, you would see gains in the 30-40rw range. Add a cam, you could see 50+. The benefit from the heads will work under 400rw. I have seen a few trucks get 30+ from a stage1 type setup from a 5.3 and 6.0. Jeez, F-bodies put down 300-320rw stock and with a heads, cammed and header car they get in the 360+ range depending on parts involved. Yes, you may loose some on the low end, but LS1Edit will take care of that. But a bigger converter would be needed soon to really put a compliment to headwork.

You can get the biggest valve in the world and it wont help a bit it the guy doing the bowl work doesnt know what he is doing. Be careful on who you let do your heads. I let a guy port and polish a set of AFR for me about 2 years ago and guess what, he put two holes in it. They leaked like hell. You'll turn beat red when you have to tear down a fresh 370 ci short block and then find out it was the heads. then you really get pissed when you have to pay another $200 to get them fixed. . What I am saying is ask for some pictures of their work and dont be scared to ask for a number of someone that has used them before. The guys that are really good make it look like art work. Just my $.02
