everyone i talked to said when you do arp's use a stretch gauge

Are you guys replacing your rod bolts with the engine still in the truck?

I thought the whole point of using ARP's or Katech over stock bolts was that they don't stretch. IF that's true then a stretch guage wouldn't be needed or am I missing something?

All bolts stretch when they are torqued. Just not permanantly like torque to yeild bolts. A stretch guage is the most acurate way to measure the amount of load you are putting on a bolt but it isn't necessary. I have built at least 40 engines over the last 15 years and I have never used a stretch guage and I have never had a rod bolt to fail. ARP's come with a moly graphite grease that you have to use. They spec their torque ratings with this grease on the threads. It is a pretty acurate method. Normal stock tq specs are designed for the use of 30w motor oil on the threads in most cases.

Yes, drop the crossmember and the oil pan is RIGHT there. A 4wd might be another story.
