Hey guys, I have been thinking for awhile if a guy could bore a 4.8L from 3.779 to 4 inchs. Put in a set of dished pistons.

I figure if it could be done, it would create some sort of high reving monster. The displacement would go from 293 to 328!

I figure for going bigger in cubes it would be a relatively cheap upgrade, since it will just require another set of pistons and a bore job, and all the related gaskets and such!

Maybe slap in a high rpm cam, and a set of pacesetters while i am at it. Get it tuned and extend the rpm range a little higher! And a higher stall converter!

What do you guys think?

Kind of sounds like a LS1 based 327 to me!

The 4.8/5.3 blocks have been bored to the LS1 bore 3.898. There isn't enough room to go to 4" safely. Put a 5.3/5.7/6.0 crank in it and have an iron block LS1.

i always thought that the 4.8L/5.3L/6.0L iron blocks were the same!

4.8 and 5.3 blocks are the same just the 4.8 has a smaller stroke..5.3 5.7 6.0's are use the same crank just bore it 3.898 and put in a crank out of one of the three and have an iron 5.7

You could bore it to 3.898 and stroke it to get 382 ci.

yeah, i guess an iron 350 sounds pretty good!

what if a guy took a used iron 6.0L block, bore it to 4.030, throw in a 4.8L crank and rods, build a little high revver.......

has it ever been considered? I guess that a guy would be better off to go with a 6.0L at that point instead of "de-stroking" an engine!

there is no replacement for displacement!

The most I've heard of a 4.8/5.3 block being bored to was 3.905", so aftermarket LS1 pistons can be used.

theres been talk on it before but as far as i know know one has done it. they just rev the 6.0 to 6000 or more rpm.
