Well, I switched from the largest and supposedly quietest magnaflow they make, dual 3" in/out, 22" case, and compared to that I didn't think the XR-1 had any drone what so ever (and the magnaflow had no drone compared to all the flowmasters I've owned). Only since I stopped driving my HD everyday and started driving my dead silent explorer have I noticed it has any drone at all, and even then it is pretty light. All I can say is it is about as loud as and flows just about as well as open pipes, while sounding much better .

How I understand it, it's the cabin noise caused by the exhaust when cruising or idling. Drone can get really annoying on long road trips, especially if you have shorter gears with an exhaust.

Yeah, it's the resonance that you get from the exhaust at certain RPM's. It sounds a lot like what you get when you drive on roads that have a texture change, that hum that comes from the tires that isn't really loud or annoying, it just sort of fills the air and mutes things a bit. It's hard to explain, but if you've ever driven or ridden in a car, than you've experienced it .
