Default Broken hood release 1987 GMC S15

Im posting this for a coworker, he is an older gentlemen in his 60's and states that when he went to pull the hood release under the dashboard for his 1987 GMC S15, the whole cable just pulled out with the handle and now he cant get his hood open. He states that it felt as though it came loose somewhere under the hood. Is there a way to jimmy the hood release so he can get the hood open or anyone else have this problem?
Thanks in advance

Weird, this happened to my sister's S10 today too.....

Just get at it from underneath with a 90 degree pick tool. You need to push the lever that the cable pulls (towards the driver side of the vehicle) and it will pop the hood up off the first catch, then you can opn the safety catch as normal.
