Building a 383...recommendations?
Hi guys,
I'm looking for as much info/help as possible with my build?
I'm stroking my old 98 L31...which dropped a rod bearing. Destroyed the crank but did no other damage.
I have a 1.6L Whipple...currently using with the marine intake but I will be swapping to the Holley intake with a custom intercooler setup.
So far I have a new crank (GMPP forged 3.800 stroke) and a ZZ4 cam.
In researching I've found I probably need to get (valve wise) the Comp 787-16 retainers, comp 648 locks (optional from what I understand), Comp 'Beehive' 26918-16 springs.
I expect I should go for 3/8 screw in studs also. Roller rockers?
I don't want to spend a fortune...but I got the crank VERY cheap ($380) so I don't mind spending a bit more on other parts.
Should I go with 6" or 5.7" rods? And what are good brands...and from where do you guys recommend I buy them?
Do any of you guys have any parts for sale that would suit my build?
(Nothing worse than after the fact...someone saying "you should have asked").

With the 3.800, you will need the GMPP pistons for there HT 383 or you will have to get custom pistons for it. $380 is a decent price but you could get a fully forged 383 rotating kit for around $1200 with flexplate and balancer, piston rings, etc.
5.7" rods will be just fine otherwise, custom pistons are needed...and that's $$$ with that 3.800 crank. There are multiple good pushrods out there but for the price, Eagle or Scat forged are very good.
As far as rockers, rollers are superior for hp but roller tip do just as well.
Now, your 1.6L whipple will need some help feeding a 383....it is not have enough cfm to be efficient on a 383 so upgrading to the 2.3L or 3.3L would be a good idea.
Your vortec heads have push in studs and I would replace them with 3/8" screw in studs. Also, I would go up on the cam a little bit....zz4 is a little bit small in a 383. I would suggest a 214/220 from Crower on a 114 lsa for the blower. If you are set on running that blower on a 383 and do not want to upgrade the 1.6L in the future, then put your compression up around 9.5:1 or 9.75:1 so that you can make up some of the power from not being able to up the psi very much.

Thanks for that....that's excellent information and exactly what I was looking for.
I'm looking at some JE custom forged pistons. I believe the HT383 pistons are cast?
