Default CA Smog questions

Hey guys i had a few questions about exhaust and CA SMOG, that i couldnt find in the search, so if i missed them just post the link

ive got a 2000 5.3 as it sits, the manifolds go to two cats, then Y to the muffler...

Now what CAN i do?

i want headers, but i heard LT's wont smog, so i cant do that?

can i re locate the cats? could i have one? what will smog? im not sure how many o2's it has but im pretty sure its two after the cats... do i just need to keep those 2 ahead of two cats? 1 cat? im not sure.. can i fake the 02's? basically im just really confused on what will or can pass and what wont.

I want to put a cut out in (1) so ideally i would like a Y to the cut out, then a cat (or two if i need it) then the muffler, (im hiding the tip, so having just 1 doesnt bother me)

basically cut out closed i want smog legal, with muffler, and open just open manifolds (or headers if its going to be legal, shorties dont even do anything do they?)

obviously you can tell how lost i am so all help is greatly appriciated... thanks

LT's are not legal in CA. period. Moving the Cats is illegal also. It's got nothing to do with emissions but part of the smog check is a visual inspection, unless you live in a few counties where they don't do a visual.

There is an O2 sensor infront of and behind the cats. The ones behind are basically there to monitor the cats and can be turned off with HPT or EFI tuning software...but again this is not legal.

Cutout behind the cats on the stem of the Y is an option and legal (afaik) as long as it's closed on the streets.

It took me a long time to just say screw it

thanks for the quick reply... could i put two cut offs before each cat?

what happens if i just take off the cats and drive it then put them back when its time to smog (as far as when or if i get pulled over with them off) arent they only really important during the time of the smog?

im guessing hi flow cats illegal?

is everything illegal thats not the stock cats in the exact location from the factory?

not legally. No.

If you are stopped and found without cats the fine is $2000 and a life time of referee smogging......a major PITA

If you are handy with tools or can afford swapping back for smog you can get hi-flow cats and LT's. I don't think most traffic stops will involve checking under the hood? I've never been stopped and I drive like a madman at times...I mean, who looks at a pick up?
