Cam Confusion?

I understand what duration, lift and lope are, just not how they interact. Anyone care to explain in English?
My next mod is a cam. I have just ordered the TT3000 and am ready to buy the cam. I dont want to do this twice so i need your help picking the "right" one.
My truck is a daily driver. I want the best power and good reliable drivability. What cam matches up with my current mods and 3000 stall? What gains would i see from it?
A few members here are running cams and making very good #'s on Dyno and track, but how are those trucks around town? And gas milage....not that i really care too much, i'm already getting crappy milage, but how much worse?
Ineed a new hobby

Thanks! Good stuff right there!
My compression is stock at 9.9:1, so i suppose i have to be careful to not bring it up too high? Is there a way to calculate compression increase?
Also, sounds like a longer duration with a narrow lobe separation will give better low/mid range performance. Right?

If you really think a 226/226 will pass smog in CA then I've got some ocean-front property in Idaho I'd like to sell you.......It may pass a sniffer test with a REALLY REALLY GOOD tune (and even that's pretty iffy unless you have it dyno tuned) but the idle will stop you cold at any smog-check station. As soon as they hear it idle they'll fail you for a modified engine. My 210/218 114 won't pass smog and my tune is NAILED !!!, I tried it just for kicks in Las Vegas the other day (which has easier smog-regulations) and as soon as they heard it idle they failed it (it would have passed the sniffer though...but just barely), it cost me $15 to find this out but at least the county I live in in CA (Inyo) only required a smog-check once when the vehicle is first purchased, NOT yearly

He designed it and he has installed this same cam in other trucks and said they passed smog with his tune. He is also going to do the dyno tune..You don't have to be a smart *** yelo

01wtahoe? Do you have the cam and stall in already? How do you like the difference? If not, when are you putting it in?
Rick knows his schizzle, and stands behind his work. His tunes are exceptional, look at what he did for my 'lil 5.3 with no internal mods or head work!
So, what 'bout the 224/114 in a 9.9:1 compression 5.3L stalled at 3000. Would it have much lope to it? (sound) I dont even want to cross the smog man funny
.
Cant we all just get along?

I think with a cool smog guy, you may be able to pass smog. As long as the tune is dead on, (Rick's usually are), you pass the sniffer, you will be alright. If you go to any Joe Schmo smog, that may be a different story.
I see many people go into the 224 range. 226 may sacrifice some low end, but make up for it the top. How high do you plan to rev your engine to?
