Also, sounds like a longer duration with a narrow lobe separation will give better low/mid range performance. Right?

After doing some reading, it seems like a 224 is rather large for a 5.3 and sacrifices low end and some drivability. Check the link out below;

If you plan to run to 6300 rpm, a 220 may be better. The 224 will make more peak power, but a little bit later (200-400rpm's higher) according to the reading I have done.
Some have said that the driveability loss with the 224 is not worth the 10-15hp of the larger 224. bluecajun has a 5.3 with bolt ons that did 340rwhp/340rwtq. Some with the 224 have the similar dyno numbers.
Good luck!

Yeah, I was leaning towards the 220, basically because it's proven, but Rick (tuner) is positive that with my higher compression (9.9:1), stall (TT3000) and his tuning, that it'd prove to work great. I'm not trying to break the sound barrier here...just love the look on the other guys face when my 5300lb truck out runs 'em. Silly?

I wasn't being a smartass....I was being honest...a little harsh, but honest
Coastal California has some of the harshest smog laws in the world.....without having an "IN" at a smog shop you'll be VERY hard pressed to pass smog with a 226 duration cam, Also, MANY smog shops do a checksum verification on the PCM as well, ANY tuning changes change the checksum, if the checksum doesn't match one of the "official" GM checksums you will fail for that as well....this is why alot of us that live in CA have a VERY hard time doing the mods we'd like to do, some of us (like myself) are lucky enough to live in somewhat relaxed counties but those on the coast are pretty limited in what we can do to daily driven non-track-only vehicles

trever1t- I haven't installed anything yet I have the engine on the stand and I'm waiting on a few parts that are on the way. The stall should be here this week. The headers I ordered won't be here til early march. I am trying to get it done by March 8 for Wednesday night drags at Sears but don't know if I'll make it. I am trying but waiting on parts sucks but ohh well no hurry.
yelo-- Yes it was a little harsh and honest but I was going by what the tuner said and he stands behind his work. Smog laws suck but hell I can try to beat Mr. Law can't I? I'll give it a shot if it don't work out F-it get another cam. My buddy is good friends with a smog guy and if his crazy *** 87-88 Mustang with stroker and turbo, heads, FTI cam, the list goes on and on I should have a good shot too. I hope. Not all his parts are smog legal but his tune is right on. If he would have took his car anywhere else he wouldn't pass the visual. Sniffer was fine just visual wouldn't.
I am going to be legal as I can but man it's hard to have a fast truck here. But hell we can try...
