Default Cam Question

I am posting this for a friend.

Hes got a 2000 ECSB Z71 with a 5.3L that is burning oil. Its blowing thick blue smoke on startup and quits when its warm. I told him its more than likely the valve seals and he needs to have the heads rebuilt. He went and bought a complete spare 5.3L for $650 with unknown mileage. He wants to have that engine gone through and add a different cam while its apart. His plan is to have it built and ready to go in one day so he doesn't have any down time. This is his only vehicle.

That is where I dont know much for the GM's. I was thinking maybe a TR220. Hes got longtubes on the way. I know he's not willing to lose and low end, so I can't talk him into anything too wild. My main question is how do you tune it? For a mild cam can it be tuned decently with a Diablo? Probably not but I figured I'd ask since he has one.

Thanks for the help,
Joey

After looking around a little more, I think that would be perfect. What about tuning with that cam?

A tune from a sponsor on this site would go along way

I figured he would need one. I know I sound like an idiot. Im used to my Dodge. Some of the cams for my truck would run with a canned Superchips tune so I didn't know if these Chevy's were the same way.

Definately not recommended since all they do is basically increase timing a few degrees and lean out the mix a bit, which for an untuned cam'd truck is not very smart.

One more question, Im sorry but I couldn't find it in a search.

Say he gets a Nelson tune, do we just tell them his mods and cam specs and they can get the tune pretty close?
