Default Cam Question I have Searched

Ok i am stuck between a 220/220 .581 .581 and a 224/224 .581 .581. I understand the duration I think means the rate at which the valves will open and close if i am correct. If so then the 220 will open and close slower that the 224????? What would be the difference in performance between these two choices. I am looking a getting the most out of the cam swap but do want longevity of my engine. I also see everyone either has a 112 or 114 LSA but what about getting a 113 LSA would this spread the powerband out any better between low rpm torque and high rpm HP. Or should i just stick with the common numbers? I will be doing rods and springs with the swap and a TQ.. My mods are in my sig. Thanks for the suggestions guys and if you think i should go with lower lift please advise because it is my Daily Driver

no, duration is just that, the duration (in degrees, 360* being full circle) the the vlaves are open. Longer duration, longer the valves are open.

I would personally go for the 220. If its a 5.3 u could think about a 224 but the 220 is pretty proven in almost any application. Other than that the 220 with less duration will open the valves more often if I remember correctly. I would do a 112 cuz its got a bad *** sound and personally I want a broader power band so I dont wanna wait for the cam to come in at 3k rpm. Can be fun tho.
For instance my 221 is going in my 6.0 unless I come across a good deal because Im gettin my *** kicked by this swap, haha

ok i see. Thanks trever1t. Do you have any suggestions on the duration and performance between the two choices. I have read many post by you and you seem to be knowledgable in this discussion. Does anyone else have any suggestions

I believe the duration directly affects the overlap and the LSA and ICL affect the DCR....

Personally i would go with a 220 or 224 on a 114+4..... I run a 220 @114+4 in a 4.8 and it is perfect for my combo...

Actually, I don't know Jack I had a 224/224 114* and I felt it was too big (came on later than I liked)for my 5.3L. If it were up to me I'd like the 220 and a 112* for a nasty street/strip setup. Advancing the 114* lsa cam did help bring the powerband back down a bit

Ok I will look into the 220. How about the lift do you think it is too much for the street.

I have the futral motorsports .588/.588 lift with a 224/244 duration with a 114 LSA. I honestly love the cam but I am in desperate need of a stall. If my truck had the Yank TT3000 and a retune it would be the perfect street and strip machine. I'm getting around 20 to 21 on the highway running 75mph and averaging 17ish in stop and go traffic. Also, I put the cam in at around 8,000 miles and truck currently has 55,900 miles with no issues other than some tunning due to the fact I had it tuned before I installed my full exhaust. Don't know how much that helps but those are my results.
