I disagree with that...if a tuner has been in the market long enough and has enough experience, they know what changes have to be made. I have a nelson mail order and it's amazing, I bet many others would say the same. I don't know the magazine, but one did a test on a dyno tune vs. his mail order and he was .4 of a hrosepower less. Just saying not all tuners are at the same level, so don't put them all in the same boat.
The problem I have with this thinking is, what about differences between vehicles? Some vehicles start different off the assembly line. Granted, Quality Assurance & Quality Control have greatly advanced and reduced variation between vehicles over the years, but variations still exist, and these differences will be amplified the more mods you add.
Let me try this again - Personally, I myself would never use a mail-order tune on anything other than a stock vehicle. Especially on a heavily modded one. If I'm going to spend $5,000 to $10,000 (or more) on good, quality add-ons, I'm going to want the maximum out of them - otherwise, why bother spending coin to get the good stuff? Why not spend $500 to $750 or even $1,000 to get a proper tune?
And, I'm not even talking about the possibility of a mail-order 'tune' running lean and ka-booming the engine. Trying to eek out power without an A/F reading in front of you....man! That just plain scares me.

I will say this For Allen, I know he will tune a motor rich until you can provide some type of logged data. My tune on my 02 idles at a 10.3 afr from allen. I am no longer using Allen due to the fact I bought EFILive and I am trying to learn it myself. I will however send my logs once Im on the road again to Justin at black bear in order to get it fixed until I can learn the basics of tunning.
