as good as the big electric fans are they still dont flow as much air as the stock one does. if your towing a heavy load at low speeds like up a big hill(mountains) there is a good chance the efans wont cut it. i had a 2500lb trailer and the coolant temps got up to around 220 last time i drove thru the mountains with electric fans. if i had a heavier trailer i think i would have had a problem.

efans with a tq converter are fine but not when combined with heavy towing too.

Even the Flex-A-Lite 282's? They flow 5500 CFM. Granted you do have to have the bigger radiator for these fans.

my last truck had 282 fans, 3000yank and a big radiator and i think you would have troubles with a 5000lb+ trailer in the mountains. like i said a 2500lb trailer was starting to push it.

Wow, that really sucks. I guess it's a good thing I don't have a trailer to haul anymore.

that isn't saying you can't tow, i am talking about some prety extreme conditions. towing 5000lbs up a mountain is hard work. i think the key is up a mountain the mph is low. most of the time you will be moving fast enough that the fans are not needed so much.

From what I dug up when doing converter research, a Yank 2600 will actually pull trailers better than stock with the relatively low stall speed and higher STR.

I think my fathers F350 (diesel), actually has about a 2200-2600 stall in it from the factory.

FWIW, I pull 5K with my e-fans with no problems. I actually carry my stock clutch fan with me on those trips. If I ever see coolant temps getting high, I'll pull over and spin on the stock fan right behind the e-fans. I don't know how well it'll actually do without the shrowd, but it sure can't hurt.

I've never had to do that though. My coolant temps never go above an indicated 190-200 - whatever the gauge normally sits at.

What does this mean - "better than stock"??? Less heat? Less effort? You certainly can't have one without sacrificing the other, unless I'm missing something here.

Of all the automatics in all pickups, the Diesels have the tightest converters because they make full torque right off idle. If the Ford is stalling over 2200RPM there is probably something wrong.

What about putting a small electric fan in front of a bad *** tranny cooler. Tru-cool has a 40,000GVW tranny cooler that I want to use if it will work. I believe it was originally designed for diesels, but I want to see if it will works on a gas. It might be able to cool things down enough to run a slightly bigger stall.

One of the concerns with oversized coolers is overcooling the fluid. ATF has an operating range that needs to be maintained. The radiator tank exchanger helps maintain the temperature. It is even possible to bypass the radiator tank and run just aftermarket cooler(s) if there is some form of temperature regulation.

Check this out - stacked plate, built in fan, and thermostatic switch:
