can't hurt a 4l80e, huh?
I had to pull the internals out of my 4l80e and replace the case. I was shocked to find a lot of metal in the pan. I have driven the truck less than 1000 miles since the conversion. This tranny came from a salvage yard and was supposed to only have 30,000 miles on it. I found the 4th gear clutches smoked and the direct clutches were burnt up. (it was still working fine) Granted within those 1000 miles I went through a whole bottle of juice and lot of full throttle upshifts, including into 4th.
So, now I am about to complete a rebuild complete with a Yank pro 3400 for good measure. We shall see if it will hold this time......anybody thought about an Allison conversion??

I wonder how much abuse it saw before you bought it? Did you open the pan and change the fluid / filter before runing it?
From what I hear, the Allison needs some upgrades before it can savely handle a modded DMAX. That would make the Allison an expensive alternative IMO.

4l80 is bad ***, i am not sure if they can take full throttle upshift into 4th in stock form though. i know the build ones can.
i have been set at 12psi-14psi for awhile now and have gone thru 5+bottle on top of that and so far so good but who knows what it really looks like in there.
i think the wrong tune could mess up a tranny, reduce line pressure at the wrong times and stuff like that.

Bigtex-Yeah I wondered that too about the previous abuse. I know the direct clutches are supposed to be the weak link in stock form. Yeah, I opened it up and put the Transgo in before running it. It was clean at that time.
Parish-you make a good point about the tune. I am just running on a stock tune (transmission wise) that Speartech sent me. I never had time to raise the pressures. My crap only runs a few hundred miles at a time nowdays, then its down for a couple months!! I will jack up the pressures a little this time around.

Allison won't bolt to the small block... and no way I'd see it fitting in a 1/2 ton. I'm about 95% sure the reason HDs are taller so they can clear the Alli.
I believe the 4L80E uses 4 clutches for OD, that's stronger than a band for OD but even then I'd be weary of a WOT shift into OD.
Also...how did the intermediate pack look?

I don't see way an Allison won't bolt a small block they use a 4l80e & Allison behind 8.1's. But it will not fit in a 1/2 ton you're right that's way HD look like they have a body lift. Beside Alli rob allot of power and are gassers don't make enough TQ to hurt them.
