Carbureted L31 Qs
Hey guys, I'm new here, thanks to my new purchase. Just picked up a car with a 96 5.7 Vortec. I don't know too much about these engines so I wanted to ask a few questions. Mainly about the carburetor. The guy put an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and 650 CFM carb on it. What kind of power effects does this have, more hp or less or about the same? Also, would you say that's a good size to run or would a 750 show a little more hp? I'm not much of a carb guy, I mostly know fuel injection, so that's why I sound like a dumbass here. Also, any cam suggestions? I'd appriciate any info you guys can give me. Right now all I really know is that this engine makes 255hp and 330ftlb, correct?

the 650 sould be ok if the motor is a stocker of close to one. Unless you plan on major mods that should give you about all the hp yuu can get and still give you good throttle response. I have a 770 cfm on my built stroker and I ended up jetting it down 2 jet sizes. Not sure about the cam but I am running a 234 untake and a 244 exaust on my vortech stroker

like dock mentioned if its basicly on the stock side a 650 is perfect for it.. on my circle track motor 355 i have 230 on the intake volume and high rise single plane intake and i run a 800 cfm c&s carburetor..

Thanks for the tip. Do you guys think it's making any more horsepower with the carb versus the original setup? I've never done or known anyone who's switched over to a carb setup like this before and I'm just curious what kind of affect it has.

It is possible that you can get more HP but not likely over the long haul. The carb want stay completely tuned like fuel injection will. As the seasons change so will your carb. You have to be able to keep it tuned all year or deal with a middle of the road tune to get you all year round
