Default Cat converter?

Has anyone put a single cat on there truck, after the Y-pipe? I know cats work better when closer to the manifolds, cause they need to be hot, but other trucks I have had were this way. My dakota r/t had a single cat after the Y, and so did a few late 80's and all 90's vortec 350's, and 4.3's.

I am getting tired of smelling like exhaust when i drive it now. Its almost as bad as a smoker that goes outside in the cold to smoke, and coming back in to a warm house.

I would like to know this as well. I've been catless for years but I'm getting tired of the stench of the exhaust. When I redesign my exhaust with a single 4 inch if I put a cat on its going to be a good 4 feet back from the headers. I would think there would still be more than enough heat even that far back but it would take a bit to get the temp up. Would it be worth while to heat wrap the entire Y pipe? Does anyone know if a 3 way cat designed for use on a diesel will work on a gas engine?

I don't see why a cat converter wouldnt work a couple feet down the exhaust, they get hot enough anywhere, as the whole exhaust can be cool except for them after sitting for 30 minutes.

Do it for science

I found a 3.5" magnaflow spun cat that is cheap enough to try.
