Cat failure

it is getting harder and harder to find a place to do a "creative" smog....dont want to risk having my VIN branded a gross polluter.
i have looked into random cats, but at $250 a piece, its expensive...and my buddy just burnt his randoms out after about a year on a 5.7 gto with a 112 on it.
i have been searching the net and the threads....just a pain in the ***
for now, im going to gut them since they are already half way blown out

I don't know how bad it is in California, but how about doing some v band clamps before and after the cats. You could quickly install the cats for the inspection, then put the dummys back in afterward. this way, you could probably use stock ones modified to fit the headers, cause who cares what they do for performance, then install your dummys. This way the cats would have an infinate lifespan. If you got randomly caught with dummys, you could play stupid and say "dammit they blew out again".

i have thought about that as well. but it will be cheaper and easier to have a "creative" smog done...~$250
new cats ~$100-$200 each, v-bands ~$40 each x 4 plus labor (100) = $460 to $650 depending on which cats i go with.
one of the cores is already loose, so it should be pretty easy to remove. the second one could be a PIA.
next time i am at the shop, ill get the y-pipe of and work on it at home...se what kind of destruction i can do. one thing for sure, this will require beer.
i blame john for all of this.

All this cat talk has me wondering about the OE cats on my 2005. They are supposed to be the same units used on Corvettes.
Just wondering how OE cats hold up behind a Radix?

Thanks,
They (2005 OE Cats) are supposed to flow decent to say the least and mine have been on since 2005 going on 4 years now a recent Dyno tune shown no sign of power losses.
I know most replace the OE cats when adding headers but what are obvious signs of Cat failures? Have anyone here had OE cats fail?
